Traditional treadmills and ordinary aerobics classes have had their day. Right now, there are loads of super-advanced, tech-driven fitness classes that make working up a sweat more fun and efficient.

Not only is this rowing studio decked out like a futuristic, ‘Blade Runner’-style nightclub, rowers use an app to act as a personal cox, tracking their individual performance metrics. Focus on upping your speed, percentage power output, heart rate or calories burned; see how you did compared with your goal at the start of the class; and over time track your body fat dropping and your muscle mass increasing. Now that’s motivating. St Bedes Hall, off Albany St, NW1 4EE. £19.

In search of something more invigorating? This fast-paced pilates sesh focusing on core strength and form takes place on the mat, against a backdrop of cinematic visuals. From jaw-dropping mountainscapes to forest scenes, it’ll feel more like a retreat in the Alps than Aldgate on a Wednesday morning. 24 Creechurch Lane, EC3A 5EH. £20.

Get set for a VR cycling race in an exotic location (thanks to high-definition screens in front of you). What's more, you'll ride on a super-swish Keiser M3i bike, dubbed the 'Porsche of indoor cycling'. It's got a numerical resistance system and a highly accurate power meter to give you the best data possible. After the class, you’ll get an email summary of your performance. Studios in Blackfriars, Richmond, Fitzrovia and Moorgate. £20.

Here, the technology is all about making your HIIT workout fun. Sweat it out in a dark room, as fluorescent lights on the floors and walls guide you through your squat jumps and mountain climbers. It’s like a giant playground for adults. 116 Cromwell Rd, SW7 4XR. £145 per month.

The Orangetheory Fitness group workout is split into five zones, based on your own heart rate, from very light (1) to all-out effort (5). To see an improvement in your health and fitness, you’d need to spend 12 minutes or more of your 60-minute workout in the ‘uncomfortable’ orange zone (4). The idea is that, using a wearable heart-rate monitor, you get a challenge at the intensity that’s just right for your body to rev up your metabolism and burn calories. Studios in Wandsworth, Aldgate and Islington. From £89 per month
