Time Out says

Finally opening its door in 2022 after various pandemic-related delays, Brixton House is effectively the reincarnation of beloved community arts centre Ovalhouse, but in a brand new building and with an appropriately geographically updated name change. Boasting two theatres, seven rehearsal rooms and a bar/café, it’s a modern building, with a programme – steered by artistic director Gbolahan Obisesan – that focusses on international and marginalised voices.

What’s on

Black Power Desk

Brixton House’s biggest show to date is this musical with a cast of nine written by Urielle Klein-Mekongo, with music by Rudimental’s Renell Shaw. Black Power Desk is set in the world of ’70s Black British activism and specifically inspired by the Mangrove Nine, a group of activists arrested for alledgedly inciting a riot from the titular Notting Hill restaurant – the subsequent trial saw them turn the tables on police and have a British judge ackowledge racism from British law enforcement for the first time ever. Gbolahan Obisesan directs.
