Buried Child

Revival for Sam Shepherd's breakthrough, Pulitzer Prize-winning twisted comedy about a young man returning home to confront his eccentric family. An interesting diversion for the fringe musical powerhouse.

Upstairs at the Gatehouse (Ovations Productions) puts on an extraordinary production of Buried Child. I was entranced every minute by the haunting (and haunted) Sam Shepard play, so brilliantly acted by this cast, and am now going to get a copy of the screenplay. Very funny yet constantly ominous and hugely satisfying. The cast is well balanced, each (and all of them together) superb. And what a wonderfully dedicated and friendly venue to support! Highly recommended. Go see this!

I attended the opening last night and was very impressed by the production. The play is perfectly suited to the intimate space of Upstairs at the Gatehouse, the actors were brilliant and the set and lighting surpassed my expectations. If you are looking for an alternative theatre night I would highly recommend Buried Child.

I attended the first preview of this production this evening and was blown away. It is an extraordinary play, and is given a wonderful revival by this talented company. Particular mention to John Atterbury as the Grandfather Dodge who is quite brilliant, his portrayal both funny and deeply moving; Joe Jameson shines as the young Vince who returns home and is not recognised by his family; and John Conroy nearly steals the whole play as the hypocritical reverend Dewis. The design of the show is also superb - Upstairs at the Gatehouse is transformed! Listen carefully and stick with this one, and you will be justly rewarded. A fabulous production.
