This latest iteration of Ibsen’s endlessly iterated proto-feminist masterpiece is written by Tanika Gupta, and comes six years after she did the adaptation honours for the same playwright’s A Doll’s House. Like that version, Gupta’s Hedda is concerned with the end of the Raj, although by the sound of it it’s more obliquely so. Set in London, 1948, India is independent and Hollywood film star Hedda Gabler is retired with her film director husband George. But in a plot twist inspired by the Anglo-India film star Merle Oberon – who hid her true ethnicity – there are aspects of Hedda’s past now coming back to haunt her. The excellent Pearl Chanda stars. Hettie Macdonald directs.
