If you know, you know: Jon Klassen’s gloriously deadpan trilogy of ‘hat’ picturebooks – that’s ‘I Want My Hat Back’, ‘This is Not My Hat’ and ‘We Found a Hat’ – are as much treats for adults as children, with their droll humour and (in the case of the first two) implicit off-page ultraviolence. The National Theatre did a completely bonkers full-length maximalist adaptation of ‘I Want My Hat Back’ a few years ago; but during lockdown, theatremakers Ian Nicholson and Sam Wilde gave us a rather different digital take on the entire trilogy, using charming cardboard puppets. Streamed under the auspices of the Little Angel, the three plays are now finally being performed IRL for a run at the Angel’s Studio. Rather than being bulked out with the usual songs and whatnot, the 35-minute show is very much all killer and no filler, consisting of all three stories. For ages two-to-six.
