Despite some formiddable hits to her name (and that of her old band Rufus), Queen of Funk Chaka Khan is perhaps not quite a big enough deal in 2026 to get a full-blown open ended West End run for a new musical about her life and songs. But this more modest affair – with a book by Nia T Hill and direction by Racky Plews – seems about right. And there’s plenty to get its teeth into, with Khan’s story a classic tale of a working class woman triumphing over the odds in a sexist industry and coming out on top. Plus it’s wall to wall bangers, with the likes of ‘I Feel For You’, ‘Tell Me Something Good’, ‘Ain’t Nobody’, ‘Sweet Thing’, ‘Higher Love’ and ‘Through The Fire’ all peresent and correct.
