La Fanciulla del West
Robert Chevara directs Puccini's 'Girl of the Golden West' for OperaUpClose, in a production transporting frontierswoman Minnie from an 1850 Californian goldmining town to a dilapidated, back-street Soho internet cafe, populated by East European immigrants and targetted by the Albanian underworld. Minnie, trusting and innocent, falls for gang leader 'Vik' Johnson, who is intent on stealing from the villains in her café, and from her. When the crooks catch up with Vik, he is moments from execution, before Minnie is forced to play a hand of poker for his life. Piano accompaniment by musical director John Gibbons. (Set design by Nicolai Hart Hansen; costumes Jonathan Lipman; and lighting Andrew May.)

Amazing, amazing production. Witty and moving. Best opera prod. I have ever seen!

absolutely brilliant! I am going again too. it really should be sold out...

Brilliant, moving and funny. Saw it last week. Best opera production I have EVER seen! Thrilling show. Best translation. Going again next week.

Saw this with the fabulous Demelza Stafford (http:// ) as Minnie. Superb. Recommended. Great production & fantastic interpretation of a rarely performed Puccini.

London director Robert Chevara did it again. This time he just re-wrote Puccini's Girl of the West and sends her as Minnie who is actually a 'Girl of the East' directly into Soho and tells a story that could happen down the road. What a great show. Funny and exciting but at same time moving, thoughtful and up-to-date. We were on the edge of our seats from beginning to end and I enjoyed every minute of the show. Robert Chevara and his fantastic young team take you on a breathtaking musical journey through today's Soho underworld which you will never forget. An absolute 'Must See' here in London.
