OperaUK presents the world premiere of Jane McCulloch's new English translation of Verdi's tale of 'the tart with a heart'. Set in Hitler's Germany in 1938, the tragic courtesan Violetta is the mistress of a Nazi Officer until she decides to follow her heart and embarks on her doomed love affair with the young Alfredo.
The role of Violetta is split between Belinda Evans and Alison Guill, while Andrew Morris and Christopher Diffey take turns as Alfredo. McCulloch, the company's artistic director, also directs and designs. Stephen Hose conducts a chamber ensemble comprising piano, cello, violin, viola and woodwind.
