Kate Tempest adapts Sophocles’s ‘Philoctetes’ for the National Theatre
Before hitting the big time as a poet and performer, Kate Tempest wrote a string of well-received mid-sized plays, notably ‘Wasted’ and ‘Hopelessly Devoted’ for Paines Plough.
She’s had a busy last few years becoming a household name with the solo stuff, but now she’s writing plays again – and at epic scale as she tackles the NT’s huge Olivier with ‘Paradise’, an adaptation of Sophocles’s drama ‘Philoctetes’, about a wounded, embittered war hero, dreaming of escape from his island exile. Lesley Sharp will play Philoctetes, in a production directed by the endlessly versatile Ian Rickson.
