This was our favourite activity of half term. We love Robert Westall's beautifully written book, and it was hard to imagine how his vivid portrayal of the north east under WW2 bombardment could be brought to life, but the Polka have managed it with aplomb. A real ensemble piece. An accomplished young cast, who change roles effortlessly, and manage to create the camaraderie between the gang, which is tested to the maximum in the exciting climax of the play. We were all better able to appreciate the extraordinariness of this time: families torn apart, and brought together, children turned feral, parents struggling to cope, and the terrifying impending threat of invasion. My 9 year old was on the edge of his seat, and 12 year old equally gripped. Highly recommended.
