This new drama from Andrew Pollard, Michael Hugo, and Theresa Heskins is in essence the ‘true’ story of the classic war film ‘The Great Escape’. The 1963 Steve McQueen flick details a real event: the mass breakout by British Commonwealth prisoners of war from German POW camp Stalag Luft III. The film was not especially accurate for various reasons, not least making the whole thing about Americans. But the actual facts of the breakout were not declassified until 1972 – and it’s these documents that form the source material for this new version, which tours the country, calling in at Alexandra Palace theatre for the summer.
