The Orchestra and Chorus of the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome, under Antonio Pappano performs a concert version of Rossini's tale of heroism set in Switzerland – based on the play by Schiller; and sung in its original French. With baritone Michele Pertusi (William Tell); tenor John Osborn (Arnold Melchthal); bass Matthew Rose (Walter Furst); bass Frédéric Caton (Melchthal); soprano Elena Xanthoudakis (Jemmy); bass Nicolas Courjal (Gesler); tenor Carlo Bosi (Rodolphe); tenor Celso Albelo (Ruodi); baritone Mark Stone (Leuthold); soprano Malyn Byström (Mathilde); mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon (Hedwige); and bass Davide Malvestio (Huntsman). (Note: at 4.45pm there is a Proms Plus event at the Royal College of Music. Opera historian Benjamin Walton and Royal Opera House programme contributor Sarah Lenton join Petroc Trelawny to explore Rossini's final opera, William Tell, and the influence it had on the grand tradition of French opera.)
