Think Italian cocktails, and the first word that comes to mind is ‘aperitivo’ – not just a drink but an occasion, the taking of a well-deserved evening refreshment in the company of friends. Aperitivi are about quality not quantity, and celebrate the everyday vitality of Italian life, and that’s what International Bartender of the Year Simone Carporale had in mind when curating the drinks programme for Bar Citrus at The House of Peroni.
To ensure the energy of the country was there in every sip, Peroni Nastro Azzurro paired up top London mixologists with creators (including Nik Southern, founder of Grace & Thorn florists, scent experts Earl of East London and illustrator George Greaves) and took them to northwest Italy, where they were challenged to use vibrant local citrus fruits in new cocktails and then bring them back to us lucky Londoners. So you might try the Limoni Della Liguria, made with the fragrant Cinque Terre lemon, created by Davide Manzi of London Edition with, Niko Drafkos and Paul Firmin (founders of Earl of East London).
And a lucky few – which could be you, if you ask – can access a secret bar deep among the alleyways, where host Simone Carporale will treat small groups of guests to his limited-edition chinotto-infused cocktails made with Peroni Ambra. Salute!
