Matthew's Yard is my favourite of Croydon's coffee shops, but it's so much more than that. Located on a secluded spot just off of the market, it's independent for a start, boasting a kinda unique feel and look, having been carved out of a building that was originally used for materials storage. I suppose it has the 'converted factory' air, which makes the interior so much more different than most of the surrounding buildings It's not just food and good coffee though, the place is a thriving hub of activity in multiple 'scenes'. A lot of Croydon's tech and arts minded people gather there, because of it's extensive events calendar (it plays host to the Croydon Tech City event, and the workspace out back is an energetic entrepreneurial plot) - there's a real friendly community amongst the regulars and it's a pretty inviting vibe. People keep coming back (me amongst them) and now that they have a late alcohol license, well….all the better! There's also a stage and performance area, and they used to be pretty consistent in putting on arts exhibitions, using the shop itself as a gallery space. A lot happens here, from book clubs, live music, educational seminars, to the Croydon branch of the tradeschool, it never really gets boring and there's always something new being developed. It's one of the most fluid places I've been too, which I really like. Progressive would be 'the word' for Matthew's Yard. I guess by design and atmosphere, it almost feels like a little piece of Shoreditch, though I suppose there's a lot less hipsters to be found down in deep South London. If you're around, skip Starbucks or Pret and give Saif and the guys at MY some love, I don't think you'll regret it! -J

Hip versatile space which serves great coffee and an ever changing variety of craft beers. Very much geared as a community space with lots of local art, shows and cultural events. Local entrepreneurship at its best!

Croydon is hardly overflowing with hip cafes but Matthew's Yard is a fine little place.

Great burgers, breakfast and beers.  There's regular gigs, exhibitions and dance events - as Jack states, a little bit of Shoreditch in Croydon (without the beards and crippling rent).

Chill place with some cool art on the walls. We didn't order any savoury food but I can vouch for the desserts. Yummy stuff! A dark chocolate-striped coconut macaron was similar to the Girl Scouts' Samoa cookie (if you don't know what that is, you missed an an awesome part of American childhood). A good balance of coconut and chocolate. The white and dark chocolate cookies were the perfect balance between soft and crunchy with lots of chocolate chunks.

The staff was also really friendly so bravo there. The only downside was the mediocre coffee (according to my husband).
