The world's top modern pentathlon athletes will compete in the London 2012 test event – the UPIM World Cup Final. Greenwich Park hosts the riding and combined event, which comprises running and shooting. The fencing and swimming bits take place at Crystal Palace and anyone is welcome to attend for free. The winners here will qualify for London 2012, so it's a big deal. Men's finals take place on Saturday, women's finals on Sunday.
Modern Pentathlon is one of two test events, along with Equestrian, where all tickets will be donated. This is partly to placate Greenwich residents with various Olympic concerns, from travel congestion to the prospect of highly-strung horses galloping around their local park throughout the summer. Locog says at least one class from every school and college in Greenwich will be able to attend for free. Greenwich Council has also received 1,000 equestrian and modern pentathlon tickets to be given away to local residents through a ballot. The deadline for applications is 3 June, with a limit of two tickets per application. See more info on how to apply, see http://www.greenwich.gov.uk/Greenwich/2012Games/OlympicNews/Apply-for-Modern-Pentathlon-Equestrian-tickets.htm.
For those locals who remain unplacated, Locog has organised drop-in Q&A sessions ahead of the test events.
