In the earthquake which struck on 28 March 2025 most of the floating islands on Inle Lake were destroyed and scattered and more than 100 farmers lost their farms. Under DEC funded Phase 2 villages have been identified to establish them again with a DEC charity'ssupport. Community women groups come together to reestablish floating islands for their farming for both family consumption and for selling.

Myanmar Earthquake Appeal - One year on exhibition says
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is hosting a powerful new photo exhibition in the heart of central London, marking one year since the devastating earthquake in Myanmar.

‘Myanmar earthquake - one year on will run through the Easter holidays, from 24 March to 19 April at St Martin-in-the-Fields Church, Trafalgar Square. The outdoor exhibition is free.

Through striking photography and film, the exhibition tells the story of the resilience and determination of people in Myanmar following the disaster and how DEC charities are supporting people impacted by the earthquake as they rebuild their lives and look towards the future.

The DEC launched its Myanmar Earthquake Appeal in response to a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that devastated communities across Myanmar. Thousands of people lost their lives, and hundreds of thousands more lost homes, businesses and livelihoods, compounding an already severe humanitarian crisis.

Thanks to the generosity of the UK public, the appeal has raised over £28 million, helping DEC charities and their local partners supporting communities to rebuild their lives. In the first six months alone, more than 530,000 people were reached with emergency support.

Located just moments from Leicester Square, the exhibition showcases Myanmar’s floating farmers, traditional bamboo houses and beautiful weaving villages, giving London audiences insight into both the human impact of disaster and how their money has supported communities.
