The Open Streets project started in South America way back in 1970, which means its taken 45 years to get across the Atlantic. We're glad it has, though – the initiative organises road closures which allow people to use them as a public space, albeit temporarily. Local businesses and community groups will provide activities such as crafts, football, Latin American dancing and bee keeping, but visitors are encouraged to bring their own fun too. Pack up a picnic, dig out your frisbee, make some music or just enjoy the extra space.
