Salzburgerland: the secret summer haven you need to know about

Forget the snowsports for a few months – Salzburg and its surrounding regions come alive in the summer months

Ask most people to imagine Salzburg and they’ll probably picture a snow-covered, winter wonderland, full of mountains, skiing, snowboarding and other sub-zero pursuits. What many people don’t realise, however, is how that winter wonderland transforms into an alpine paradise in summer.

Sure, winter in Salzburgerland is great, but – whisper it – summer might just be even better. Those same mountains that were prime skiing territory in colder times suddenly become perfect for other activities: walking, hiking and mountain biking are all on the cards if you want to explore the great outdoors and witness some incredible Alpine landscapes.

Take hiking, for example. There are over 7,000km of hiking paths around Salzburgerland and almost 3,000 designated trails to keep you busy. Or consider hiking to part of Salzkammergut, the Salzburg Lake District. It’s not widely known outside of Austria, but there are numerous lakes within easy reach of Salzburg – and we’re talking vast, crystal clear, ridiculously beautiful lakes that look like they’ve landed straight out of a fairytale. Head to Fuschlsee, Mondsee, Wolfgangsee and Obertrumersee for particularly magical scenes that’ll make you want to buy a lakeside house there and then.

Speaking of water, summer is also a great time to dip into Salzburgerland’s many outdoor thermal spas. The region is full of these ‘thermen’, which retain a constant warm temperature throughout the year. Many are situated in stunning locations, meaning you can kick back in the toasty water while gazing out at impossibly beautiful scenes. The only problem is, you just won’t want to get out.

Elsewhere, you can follow the Salzburger Almenweg trial, 350km of hiking paths that let visitors explore the rustic Pongau regions, weaving through meadows, and forests, with waterfalls and mountains to gaze at along the way. Scattered along the trail are various ‘Alpine summer huts’, where dairy farmers used to bring their cows during summer, now converted into comfortable lodgings for hikers to rest-up for the night.

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

Once you’ve explored the pastures of Salzburgerland, don’t forget to take advantage of summertime in Salzburg city centre, too. Once again, it takes on an entirely different character in summer. For one thing, the many gardens across the city are in bloom and waiting to Instagrammed, such as the lush greenery and colourful flowers of Mirabell Palace.

As you’re strolling around, why not take advantage of clear summer skies to soak up some more breathtaking views – and don’t worry if you’re done with hiking, as one of the most impressive city centre views is also one of the most easily accessible. Hop on the Mönchsberg Lift and a 30-second journey will elevate you 60 metres, giving you unrivalled panoramic views across the city, as well giving you access to the Museum der Moderne, with its impressive collection of contemporary modern art, and Restaurant M32, if you fancy making the most of the setting while you dine.

Feeling spoilt for choice yet? How about a few more options? Okay, almost 200 options, in fact. To really make the most of summer in Salzburgerland you’ll need the Salzburgerland Card. This handy little tool allows you free or reduced entry to 190 attractions and event across the region over six or 12 days, including thermal spas, mountain festivals, cable cars, bathing lakes, museums, castles, scenic train rides and tons more.

That’s summer sorted, then. Get the fun started with British Airways, who are offering low fares to Salzburg, allowing you to start easing yourself into an early summer. Visit ba.com/Salzburg to find out more and book.
