Great location, fantastic experience and tasty cocktails

Just minutes away from Finsbury Park Station, this reservoir has a lot to offer on a summer night. I arrived an hour before sunset and made the most of my time with a jump into the refreshing crystal clear water. The dock allowed me to take the plunge at once, but for people who want to ease their way in, they can enter from the shore. I spent the remaining sunlight relaxing in the lake, enjoying the one bit of nature that is hard to find in London. The real adventure starts once the sun begins to set. You are invited to stay in the water for as long as you wish, but I chose to venture onto the shore, where marshmallows, mulled wine (a few delicious cocktails) and a campfire greeted me.

The adventure starts about 3mins from Limehouse station. First things first, safety, life jackets on and the safety brief is done before heading to the waters. Unfortunately on this day, the canal had a very lovely shade of green on it but nonetheless, with minor hesitation, we got into the small kayak and started paddling about. Thankfully the weather was amazing and hot, almost too hot. Its a great night out and could be a fun way to explore a different side of London.

f you're bored of doing the same old thing every evening/weekend then have a look at Secret Adventures kayaking trips. No experience necessary as the guides will show you exactly what to do. And it's in the canal so you don't need to worry about tidal waters sweeping you away! You travel in a group, 2 per kayak, but the guides go back and forth to make sure everyone is doing ok and there is absolutely no pressure to go at a certain speed. Which is good because you do get some serious shoulder ache after a while so you might want to stop and watch the little ducks go by. Give the swans a wide berth though!

I'd definitely recommend this as something to do with friends, on your own or with a date. If the weather is nice even better! You still get a little bit wet just from the splashing of the oars (that could have been just me). One thing I noticed is how quiet it was. They've certainly picked a good route as there were hardly any boats apart from the adorable house boats moored at the side and not many passers by. A rare opportunity to enjoy some peace and quiet whilst being at one with nature. And still in London!

Secret Adventures is the bomb for anyone with a taste for the wild and quirky. For those wishing to make the most of the great outdoors. Those with a taste of adventure. Those totally in love with London. So basically all of you Time Out readers!

Started by Madoc Threipland after his adventures across the globe, Secret Adventures brings together a good bunch of people for each of their adventure-packed, accessible events. From kayak trips to husky sleigh rides, SUP and wild swimming, there's really something for everyone - but what they do best is show you the city like you've never seen before.

Having attended an evening kayak tour to Crate Brewery, we got to paddle on one of London's oldest canals, through side streets and wildlife that you really can't see from anywhere else. It's real excercise, although not strenuous - about 1.5 hours of solid paddling, all with the promise of a reserved table at Crate's floating bar and warm, freshly made pizza to order. The sights and sounds of London from the canal are nothing like you've seen before. It's silent, beautiful and even the occasional floating rubbish adds to your sense of adventure.

Madoc is a welcoming host and guide and has some truly brilliant ideas when it comes to exploring the great outdoors. I would highly recommend any of their activities - although it's worth subscribing to their newsletter as pretty much everything sells out instantly!

Secret Adventures run unusual experiences in the great outdoors, designed to bring out your inner explorer! Think kayaking, canoeing, swimming under a full moon, toasting marshmallows over the fire, stand up paddle boarding, husky sledging ... you get the gist.

I chose the 'Night Kayak to London Bridge' event, which I would recommend to anyone. Your unique vantage point down on the water affords amazing views of the city's iconic riverside landmarks. London looks pretty damn fine after dark most of the time, but throw in the pretty lights reflecting off the Thames and you've got yourself a real postcard.

If you're new to kayaking, don't panic. The guides will give you a few pointers to help you keep up, and no one is left behind to get mowed down by a cruise liner. It's a good idea to wrap up warm and toasty for your adventure, as it gets pretty nippy out on the Thames! Especially once your "hilarious" mate inevitably splashes you with an oar. D*ck.

Just as you feel like your arms are about to seize up, the group stops at a lovely pub right on the river front for some good grub and a glass of vino. Tie up your kayak right underneath the venue and head into the warm and dry through a secret entrance. Blankets are provided, and you can snuggle next to a heater until the glorious pie and mash arrives. YES!

The 'adventures' can be a bit pricey, but they're really memorable experiences.

These guys organise fantastic adventures around London and nearby for the budding adventurer.

I've been following their events for a long time now, they do night time canoe/kayak trips around London, moonlight swims and back to basics adventure weekends!

All led by a former expedition leader / youth worker.

Hugely recommend - surprise yourself
