Time Out says

There’s no denying that January is the most miserable month of the year. But if you’re not shy of singing and want to inject some positive vibes into the dark, cold days of early 2026, then this ancient tradition might be for you. The word ‘wassail’ has pagan roots and basically translates to ‘good health’. Historically, it involves blessing apple orchards and trees. But Londoners have been embracing this winter custom more and more in recent years, particularly in Walthamstow, where this longstanding celebration combines singing, drinking, chanting and all-around merriment.

Head to Walthamstow Cricket Tennis and Squash Club for a friendly singing workshop – the bar will be open if you need a bit of liquid courage – and then join the walk from Wood Street to Orford Road, stopping off at different venues along the way – all in the spirit of celebrating the New Year in song. And if the British weather holds out, they’ll even be a bonfire in a secret wood afterwards.
