What’s the deal with… Pint of Science?

So, scientists in pubs eh?

Yeah, and cafes and community halls in 37 cities across the UK. Many are in really unique locations: the Nottingham one is in a former canal museum, so visitors will cross a footbridge to get to the bar – which we think is pretty cool.

And what are they actually doing?

Swapping science labs for stages, they’ll be hosting a whole load of unique talks, live demonstrations and experiments. The aim is to have a fun night out where you learn something new which you’ll want to tell your mates all about

But the talks won’t be boring, will they?

Heck no! There’s a wealth of new things to learn from the experts. From nature to the human mind, atoms to technology, no topic is off-limits (and you don’t need to be a scientist, just have a curious mind to understand them). Examples of the talks include genetic methods to reunite distant relatives, the polarising effect of social media, the secret life of clouds, antivirals versus vaccines and how we measure global methane emissions. See, all the interesting stuff!

What else is going on?

Glad you asked. There’s a variety of activities, demos, workshops, art-science and even live experiments taking place across the three-day event. Just take a look at the event schedule ahead of time.

And you know what always makes a pub trip better? A quiz. Members of the audience will be able to take part in the largest-ever multi-city quiz at Pint of Science. Using the Kwizzbit app, you and your mates will test your newfound knowledge and science trivia. You’ll go head-to-head with players in other cities, hopefully claiming the top spot in the country.

Sounds fun! When is it?

From May 22 to 24 during the evenings.

Will there be an event near me?

Yeah! There are 400 events in over 125 venues across dozens of cities. London alone has 75 events in 25 pubs: from north to south, Highbury to Streatham and from west to east in Chiswick to Mile End.

It spans old and new too, notable spots include the George Inn in London Bridge, which is one of the capital’s oldest pubs and its only surviving galleried coaching inn (apparently Shakespeare was a frequent guest, and his plays were performed in the courtyard for years), and there’s The Golden Goose theatre in Camberwell, which is a brand new performance venue and creative space. So something for every taste! Find your nearest one here

Does it cost anything to go?

Tickets are just a fiver, which is a sweet deal considering you’re getting a lifetime’s worth of new wisdom.

Will I come out feeling like da Vinci?

We can’t make promises like that now, can we?
