What, to you, says summer in London? That’s what we’re asking the London musicians soundtracking our sunny days and balmy evenings. Femi Koleoso is the drummer for the much-loved jazz quintet Ezra Collective, as well as drummer for Gorillaz and DJ on Reprezent Radio on Saturdays 6-8pm. He’s also, as it turns out, a big fan of making the most of summer in London, with some invaluable inspo on how you can do the same. Catch Ezra Collective at the Troxy on August 13.

Want to get around with ease this summer? What’s Your Thing is created in partnership with FREE NOW, the mobility super app, which gives you the freedom to zip around the capital with Black Cabs, Private Rides, eScooters or eBikes.

Eating and drinking: Gillett Square

It’s a triumph of London both in the rain and grey, but when the sun’s out, it takes its final form. You have the jerk bin filling the space with the beautiful smell of what would later be your dinner. Table tennis tournaments on the go, skateboarders and roller skates. Soundtrack provided by the open windows of NTS Radio whilst bumping into every local Hackney DJ that you love. If you’re feeling to take it back to the original flavours, you have Mama Vic’s and Aso Rock for some Nigerian food. A perfectly situated off license for a couple freezing cold ones, and if that’s not enough, buy some records at Eldica Records and end the night with some jazz and cocktails in Servant Jazz Quarters. Long live Gillett Square.

Chilling out: Regent’s Park

For me nothing beats a good walk through Regent’s Park. Dianna Gardens to look at the roses and stuff. Beautiful views. And if that’s not enough, if you’re lucky you can see the giraffes and camels as London Zoo borders it. Picnics are underrated. Portable speaker, some drinks and food, all in a cute basket. I’m not mad about that. I just beg you throw all your rubbish away when you’re done and the world can remain looking pretty. Regents Park, Camden entrance, it’s a must.

Partying: Notting Hill Carnival

CARNIVAL. Is there a more perfect day? I’ve travelled the world HARD. I can reliably say that Notting Hill Carnival is one of the best parties on this planet. Start the day linking my brothers. Straight to Channel One Sound System, then Jah Shaka. Some floats, some rampage, then house party in west: it’s just perfect.

Trying something new: salsa dancing

You have to discover London’s salsa scene. Try learning to dance, but more importantly discover the scene. I do it to find music which directly inspires Ezra’s music but also the way I run live performances. It’s amazing. Southbank area has a salsa dance in the evenings which is amazing. Just turn up and join in. And there’s classes everywhere. Couldn’t recommend more. Check out Ronnie Scott’s salsa bands also – they’re COLD. The music, community and vibes are strong and perfect for a warm summer evening.

Embracing the start of summer

It has to be the annual Jubilee Church BBQ. Kirk Franklin blaring from the speakers. Bumping into your friends from secondary school that you only really need to see once a year, maxi dresses and fresh Air Force 1s everywhere.

Also, it’s the panic barbecues for me. That’s the start of summer. When everyone’s like OH SNAP IT’S 24 DEGREES. Run to Tesco and get a portable barbecue that doesn’t really work, only sausages and burgers available, no time for anything clever. Summer has begun.
