With just two years' notice, in 1908 London became the first Olympic host to provide a purpose-built stadium. In 1948 Wembley was brushed up on a minimal budget. Third time round, Rod Sheard, senior principal at Populous, the architects responsible for the 2012 stadium at Stratford, discusses the lessons learnt from previous Olympics and the challenge of meeting the brief in the 21st century.
