[title]When was the last time you played a board game? We’re guessing maybe a few Christmases ago… something like Monopoly maybe? Well, believe us when we say things have really moved on in the board game world – in a big way.
And look, we love the classics (in fact, we’d exile to Kamchatka anyone who doesn’t appreciate the value of Risk) but this new generation really is showing the oldies how to do things. You could say we’re in a new golden age of board games and to be quite honest with you we couldn’t be more pleased.
Some, like the award-winning, kingdom-building dominoes game, Kingdomino, riff on the classics. Others, like The Mind, offer brilliant and inventive simplicity and some, like the fast-and-furious (and often hilarious) Anomia are designed for speed. But our favourites? Those that turn game-playing into something approaching storytelling.
From the steampunk, dystopian world of Scythe and the incredible sci-fi realisation of Terraforming Mars to the incredibly addictive settlement building of Catan, these more complex games offer a rich, rewarding and deeper gaming experience. And if that doesn’t make sense? Just think: board games with some serious bells on, basically.
And as we all begin to appreciate the simple things in life and better understand those real-life connections with our friends and family (not to mention a desire to step away from the screens), we can’t think of many better ways to while away an afternoon.
