After graduating from art school and finding that the UK art industry leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to gender inclusivity, a group of female photographers are tackling their gripes with the art world head-on. The result is ‘Women on Women’, a showcase of work by photographers Tami Aftab, Serena Brown, Hayleigh Longman, Phoebe Somerfield, Ellen Stewart, and Poppy Thorpe, all championing under-represented perspectives and showing just how eccelectic and varied London’s emerging female photographers can be.
From Stewart’s wry, sexually-charged snapshots re-directing the male gaze to Brown’s blend of fashion and social documentary depicting the rollercoaster journey that is the experience of female coming-of-age, and Thorpe’s images of women’s bodies stripped bare (of both clothes and preconceptions), the show is a powerful and beautiful love letter to women and female artistry. Plus, it’s your chance to get to know some great emerging female photographers in London right now.
