You know, you don’t need to jet off somewhere for a cultural city break. This summer, CrossCountry is helping you to make the most of the staycation season with over 100 must-see destinations across its network. Experience the joys of travelling around the country with Britain's largest long-distance operator, and be smug about your lack of carbon footprint, while making memories in some fantastic places. It’s been named our top city in the world for good reason. The Scottish capital is compact, hilly and filled with pretty buildings. Fill your brain with history at the National Museum of Scotland, then hit the shops on Victoria Street or stop by The Scotch Whisky Experience to try the perfect dram. In need of a good giggle? You can laugh yourself silly at The Stand comedy club.

Don’t miss this: Edinburgh Castle has been proudly looming over the city since the Iron Age, making it a must for history buffs and tourists alike. (7-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley station)

Newcastle has established itself as a centre for art and culture. Meaning you have to check out the creatives at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and have brunch at the achingly cool Biscuit Factory. Another hotly-tipped attraction is The Victoria Tunnel, a historic subterranean wagonway (probably best to avoid if you’re claustrophobic). And if you’re around on a Sunday – wander through Quayside for the famous market.

Don’t miss this: It’s an icon, really. Make time for a few piccies with the Angel of the North. (32-minute train from Newcastle train station

Want the feel of a country town with the benefits of a city? Head to York. Of course, you’ve got to pay a visit to the iconic York cathedral while you’re there and, if the weather behaves, cruise along the Ouse – which is pretty fun to say aloud. There’s also a thriving food and drink scene here, so head over to a brewery tour at Brew York or snack your way through York's Chocolate Story.

Don’t miss this: It wouldn't be a successful visit without a walk along the city walls, so get on up there. (19-minute walk from York station)

This city isn't just famous for the Peaky Blinders, oh no. With more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city outside the capital, Birmingham will have you eating like a king. There’s also a thriving undercurrent of creativity, which you’ll discover at the Custard Factory or while traversing some of the city’s best hidden bars. As for cricket fans, snap up the chance to go behind the scenes at Edgbaston.

Don’t miss this: If you want a taste of what the city is really about, experience the cool indie quirks of the Jewellery Quarter. (17-minute walk from Birmingham New Street station

Bristol is somewhere that has a very distinct feel. Bask in the ‘Bristol sound’ that spawned Portishead and Massive Attack by going to a local music venue – Full Moon and Attic Bar is a good place to start. It’s also famed for its creative graffiti, which you'll want to go hunting for before tucking into grub at St Nick’s. Our tip: head to Clifton Observatory and you’ll get some incredible views of the Suspension Bridge.

Don’t miss this: Gloucester Road is a haven of charity shops, vintage treasure troves, bars and restaurants, so splash the cash here. (13-minute drive from Bristol Temple Meads station
