If you’re in need of a trip that’ll help you relax and get you back in touch with nature, might we suggest the undersung region of Ticino? This is the southernmost – and sunniest – bit of Switzerland, and whether you’re after a slower pace, or more active outdoorsy fun, like paragliding and hiking, there’s definitely a Ticino bucket list for you to complete.

Here, we’re showcasing four bucket lists, each of which capture a different aspect of Ticino as an unmissable destination. From outdoor escapes and vibrant events to ‘dolce far niente’ (that’s ‘the sweetness of doing nothin’), and seamless travel across the area’s main attractions, it’s all covered. Planning for your next trip starts here.

Our tips for a trip to Switzerland’s sunniest spot

Up for a spot of dolce far niente?

In Ticino, everything feels brighter, warmer and more effortless – and this bucket list is inviting you to experience it for yourself. Slowing down is the name of the game: catch views so scenic all your photos will look like postcards, explore an urban winery, or wander through tiny traditional villages brought back to life, such as Corippo in the Verzasca Valley. For a pretty perfect day, we’d recommend following the Hermann Hesse Trail for a literary walk through landscapes and poetry, before ending the day with a local wine tasting in the Mendrisiotto region.

Can’t wait to get outdoors?

All across Ticino, spectacular trails, panoramic heights and quiet corners in wild nature bring in explorers from across the globe. There are hiking and climbing routes in alpine valleys like Bedretto and Lavizzara, and paragliding flights from Monte Lema and Monte Generoso, plus cable-car rides, and lakeside jaunts for those who might be a little less thrill-seeking. Close the day out with the cosy traditions showcased at local grottos, and you’ve got a real itinerary on your hands.
