America in Primetime
Sat May 11, 10.30-11.30pm, BBC2
It’s a sign of the close integration between British and American TV culture that this PBS series has been so seamlessly re-worked for British audiences. It concludes tonight with a look at crusading heroes – and it’s surely a sign of both TV’s spiralling complexity and the challenges of our times that the lines between good and evil have become so blurred.
At the dawn of TV, you could hate a crook and trust a cop. But who are the emblematic Lone Rangers of our current era? Dexter Morgan? Vic Mackey? Omar Little? Walter White? This series has been as much a classy list-show as it’s been a chunk of genuine analysis. But the quality of talking heads alone (tonight, David Simon, Gillian Anderson, Michael K Williams) has made it hugely worthwhile.
