Brady and Hindley: Possession

Brady and Hindley: Possession

Thu Jul 11, 9-10pm, ITV

The recent appeal hearings for Ian Brady, 50 years after his horrific crimes, give this sombre and engaging documentary a dark timeliness. Its peculiar title refers, at least in part, to Brady’s corruption of Hindley through his interest in sadism and Nazism.

Macabre anniversary aside, the angle for this ITV hour is the release of new insights into the Moors Murders garnered from Hindley’s letters and tapes (sent to writer Duncan Staff) which tell her version of events. This gives her a surprising amount of narrative control over the programme.

Hearing her surprisingly posh, well-to-do voice from beyond the grave is a stark reminder of her humanity, as is her description of feeling ‘beyond redemption’ after the second killing. A fascinating and fresh insight into an event in modern British history that continues to haunt us.
