Doctor Who
Sat Apr 27, 6.30-7.15pm, BBC1
An episode with a title like ‘Journey to the Centre of the Tardis’ is a hostage to fortune. After all, with possibilities infinite, someone’s going to be disappointed. But Whovians should find much to enjoy tonight as ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Sherlock’ regular Steve Thompson’s script wrestles with the strange internal logic of the show and the police box at its heart.
When the Tardis is badly damaged during an inept deep-space grab by Ashley Walters and his salvage crew, the Doctor heads to the innards of the machine to rescue Clara and fix a newly opened rupture in time. There’s a monster of sorts and a few nods to Time Lords past, but Walters’s crew prove little more than a shakily performed plot device. Instead, the meat of the episode is to be found in the evolution of the relationship between Clara and the Doctor, as well as the clunking great hint dropped regarding the series’ big reveal. Think Inspector Morse.
