Here we go again. Even without a major international tournament to excite and then depress us, we’re never free from football for long. Tonight, the new season begins with a League One clash between Sheffield United and Notts County at Bramall Lane. And tomorrow, the lumbering Saturday afternoon Bantersaurus Rex that is ‘Soccer Saturday’ will return to cover the first games of the new Championship season.

There’s some fresh competition for Sky this year in the shape of BT Sport – perhaps slightly more formidable than Setanta and ESPN and offering a rather more interesting inducement, in the shape 38 top-flight games and 30 Scottish Premier matches. The first opportunity to check BT’s credentials will come tonight as Partick Thistle host Dundee Utd, while exclusive Premiership rugby should also offer a handy inducement for sports addicts. Either way, it should make for an intriguing season both on and off the pitch.
