A few weeks before the nations’ cricket teams renew hostilities, the England rugby union team’s autumn Test series begins at Twickenham against Australia, with Argentina and New Zealand to come on successive Saturday afternoons in west London.
The after-effects of the chastening (for Australia), thrilling (for everyone else) Lions tour remains to be seen, although the Wallabies may prefer to dwell on their 20-14 victory in the corresponding fixture last year. But, with Stuart Lancaster confirming Chris Robshaw will continue as captain ahead of Tom Wood, there won’t be any shortage of determination as an injury-troubled England bid to overturn the odds and come out on top.
