There’s only so long that a TV drama can afford to be merely intriguing. It soon needs to graduate to absorbing, involving, even thrilling. Detroit dirty cop series ‘Low Winter Sun’ is struggling with that transition; indeed, mid-season longueurs are rather overtaking it.
Tonight, Geddes is sidetracked by domestic issues; his daughter is in trouble and his obsessive devotion to his job and attendant neglect of his family is making it difficult for him to take the moral high ground. Meanwhile, Agnew’s search for prostitute Katia is leading him to some dark places.
The performances are keeping it watchable: Mark Strong is particularly convincing as the adrift Agnew. But it still doesn’t feel quite psychologically adroit enough to sustain its languid pacing. For now, we’re just about sticking with it. But something needs to happen soon.
