Let battle commence! No, not so much on the pitch – what’s happening off it may prove equally significant to the future of the national game as two broadcasting behemoths jockey for supremacy. Snotty-nosed TV newcomer BT Sport kicks off the Premier League season with Liverpool v Stoke City at 11.30am. Old warhorse Sky retaliates with Swansea hosting Manchester United at 5pm, showing it on Freeview via Pick TV.

Big statements from both, no doubt. Even if Sky, as the more established name, seems likely to pick up more viewers, it could be a closer call in presentational terms. But BT will doubtless be hoping for Luis Suarez to return from his self-imposed huff, while Sky probably wouldn’t object if David Moyes got round to signing someone at some point.

Neither Stoke nor Swansea – perennial underdogs, both – can be written off, however, making this an intriguing curtain raiser for a season whose path will eventually take us all the way to Brazil and next year’s World Cup. We’re already excited…
