Series one, episode six
An almost perfect example of history being written by the winners, it might be. But ‘The Americans’ remains pretty darn exciting, even if the endgame remains unavoidably fixed. Tonight, the US government changes some encryption codes. No biggie perhaps, except that the change takes place almost immediately after the Russians have uncovered them. Which can only mean one thing: a mole is on the loose.

This discovery will have serious implications for Philip and Elizabeth, their kids, a hitchhiking weirdo and Martha the office girl, who has succumbed to the charms of Philip’s blond-wigged Swede. Elsewhere, Nina starts to earn her stripes while continuing to feel like the most unreliable of agents. The writers are doing an excellent job of sustaining tension – we suspect the hi-jinks will increasingly come from the creaks and strains within the Jennings family, but this remains classy fare.
