Series two, episode one
Series two of the Victorian department store drama loosely based on Emile Zola’s novel returns a year after Moray’s spurning of Katherine Glendenning for the sweet Denise. Moray has lost the store to the Glendennings and is in Paris, with the Paradise under threat of being sold by Katherine’s enigmatic new husband Tom Weston, played with devilish glee by Ben Daniels.

Perhaps inevitably – as characters and plotlines are re-established – it’s a slow opener, and dramatic elements such as sabotage and espionage will feel familiar to ‘Downton…’ fans. All the same, the modern notes – Sam gossiping about the royal family, gentle touches of shop-floor humour, lewd language from the ever-enjoyable Myrtle, the tension and secrets surrounding Katherine and Weston’s relationship and the dilemmas faced by modern women trying to juggle personal and professional lives or climb the corporate ladder – suggest that things could warm up nicely as the series progresses.
