The rear admiral, the duke (formerly the Dog & Whistle), the emperor, the painted lady, the bent copper, the small brown one floating in your tea. Lepidoptera are all about us, but how much do we really know about these beautiful, elusive creatures? Fucking tons. A mind-stalling amount. The trouble with nature documentaries, unlike those on other subjects, is that it’s not the case that you’re basically interested in what they’re about or not.

I like butterflies as much as the next man, unless that man is Vladimir Nabokov, but do I want to learn about them for an hour? No. No, I don’t. Anyway, if you do, this is full of fascinating info, luscious close-up photography from the best in the business, personable presenters, and it’s all done on the public dollar, so the Camberwell Beauty doesn’t have to pause for a message about the Oak Furniture Land summer sale. Now flit off.
