Series one, episode ten
Preceding the final episode of ‘Veep’ at 10pm, this is a climax of an altogether darker hue. Karl Roebuck has discovered that the Truth Terrorist’s displays of inventive butchery were, after all, entirely personal and directed at him. But does that help? Or is Elise’s dysfunctional rationality going to be the only way through this? Either way, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

There’s still the odd moment of mordant Anglo-French humour: ‘Pack umbrellas and food supplies,’ says one of the Gallic cops. ‘We’re off to England.’ But generally, this is intense, even doomy stuff. Overall, this has been a fine series with any longueurs (and let’s be honest, there were a few) overcome by the wonderful chemistry between twin leads Stephen Dillane and Clemence Poesy.
