US Open Tennis; Premier League Football

Mon Aug 26, 4-7pm & 7-11pm, Sky Sports 1

A cracking double bill for a bank holiday afternoon. We advise filling the fridge and not moving all day. The phrase ‘Andy Murray: Defending Champion’ still doesn’t quite sit right. But we’re through the looking glass now, people, and that’s the new reality facing the curly-topped Caledonian tennis titan. Still, we suspect that a large percentage of the British public will regard the rest of Murray’s career as essentially, a prolonged lap of honour. Maybe the pressure’s off but, as his defence begins, we can’t imagine this fiercely driven character allowing himself such laxity.

Later, Sky’s Monday Night Football sees a really compelling match-up. Yes, tonight we’ll really get an insight into the ongoing practicality of Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher sharing a studio. Neville has managed, in no time flat, to establish himself as one of the best sports pundits in living memory – could the presence of a spiky Scouser inspire him to still greater heights? On the pitch, it’s the small matter of Manchester United v Chelsea. It doesn’t get any bigger than this, as Andy Gray will no doubt be yelling at his telly.
