We're still awaiting the to-be-determined opening date of Dominique Ansel's first restaurant in Los Angeles, but at least we now know the name of the Cronut creator's spot, due at the Grove this fall: 189 by Dominique Ansel.
The name of the restaurant is a happy coincidence for Ansel. The Cronut-originating Dominique Ansel Bakery resides at 189 Spring Street in New York's Soho neighborhood. The L.A. location, meanwhile, will land at 189 The Grove Drive, the address for the popular pedestrian shopping mall.
We first heard word in February of the restaurant's opening. Ansel's fifth—and largest—project will include brunch, dinner and cocktails as well as space to accommodate for events; it marks the first full-service restaurant for Ansel. The restaurant will sit on the second floor of the space, with seating for 150 people. The bakery will be on the first floor, with indoor and outdoor café seating for 75.
While the restaurant aspect is the L.A. location's unique aspect, the familiar bakery component will be a part of the space as well. Ansel's inventive pastry dishes—Cookie Shot, Frozen S’mores, DKA (Dominique’s Kouign Amann) and, yes, the Cronut—are all expected to make the trip over to the West Coast, as well as some new only-in-L.A. creations.
It's not the first time the OG Cronut has made its way to L.A.; a 2014 pop-up at none other than the Grove brought the cult-favorite out here in the midst of its sweet hysteria.
We don't know quite yet what the restaurant will serve, but we do know that Ansel was in L.A. recently to start work on the menu. That, and to show off his superb taste in L.A. eateries such as Proof Bakery, Sugarfish and Kismet.
