6 things to do now that Spring has sprung in Los Angeles

Happy vernal equinox! Spring officially arrives this Sunday, March 20, and it's one of the best times of the year in Los Angeles. Wildflowers are everywhere, the streets are lined with pink (soon to be purple) jacaranda petals, mockingbirds are singing, warm breezes are blowing and there's that extra evening sunshine to enjoy as well. Can't wait to ring in spring? Make the most of the season's first weekend with these six things to do.

Have a fling

We don't mean a romantic one (though, 'tis the season). Celebrate springtime at the Bergamot Station Spring Fling on Saturday. Peruse the artwork at the Santa Monica center's 30 galleries, learn how to make origami at Hiromi Paper, pick up floral designs by Lilla Bello, dance the Argentine tango and listen to music from the Venice Symphony Orchestra.

Take a day trip

Pack a picnic basket, roll those windows down and get outta town for a few hours. The springtime weather is just right for a quick trip, and luckily we happen to be surrounded by spectacular landscapes, beautiful beaches and small towns perfect for low-commitment adventuring.

Relax on the beach

While half of the country is starting its thaw and just beginning to flirt with the idea of going to the beach, it's business as usual for us. Sure, the water temperature is still pretty chilly, but let’s be honest, you had no plans to get wet anyway. With beach city temperatures expected to hover in the mid-70s this weekend, it sounds like the perfect time to hit the sand. That said, it's still spring break, so you may want to head farther out toward El Matador, Leo Carrillo and County Line to avoid the tourist-choked summer-like crowds.

Hang with the Easter Spring Bunny

Take part in an afternoon of free kids entertainment and Easter egg hunts at Pershing Square, starting with a hunt for those under 4 at 12:30pm Sunday. Since it's a city-produced event, you'll be able to pose for photos with the non-denominational "Spring Bunny"—but we've heard he's close friends with that other famous Bunny.

Get some perspective

Climb up into the hills before those sweaty summertime days—and crowds—return. And did we mention the snow-capped mountain views? Spending the afternoon in the sweet-smelling air high above the city feels quintessentially springtime to us. If you're looking for a more refreshing trek, consider charting a course for a waterfall. Or if you want to skip the hiking part altogether, spend the afternoon sauntering around a garden oasis.

Treat Yo Self

Celebrate the season and pamper yourself silly at our very own Treat Yo' Self event on Sunday. McConnell's, Créme Caramel, the Gaderene Swine and more will be bringing sweet treats to LA River Studios, along with coffee from Caffe Luxxe and beer from Tsingtao. Get a new 'do at our hair braiding station, dance to a live DJ and watch chalk artist Ben Dehart work his magic as you take breaks between each bite. Best Friends Animal Society's mobile pet adoption will also be on site, so you can pick up a furry friend to frolic with all season long.
