A century-old warehouse in the Arts District will soon become a chic boutique hotel

Visitors to the Arts District may soon have a chic new place to lay their heads when a boutique hotel planned for the neighborhood opens. The property, the first in L.A. for Grupo Habita, a hotel group responsible for some of the hippest hotels in Mexico City, Chicago, and New York, will overhaul a 109-year-old brick warehouse into a modern lodging complete with a lush rooftop lounge, garden and pool.

Grupo Habita has made a splash in the U.S. with the Hollander and Hotel Americano in New York City and the Robey in Chicago. In Mexico, where the company is based, they have opened a dozen of their design-minded properties.

The DTLA hotel doesn’t have a name yet, but from permits filed with the city we do know a few details about the project. There will be 66 rooms, a large restaurant space, a private screening room and some retail store space, listed on the paperwork as a planned bike shop and produce shop. We might be most excited about the rooftop, where they’ve proposed a large, landscaped terrace with pool deck and bar.

To accommodate all of that, San Diego-based architecture firm Gracia Studio will be making some major changes to the structure at 400 South Alameda Street. Currently a vacant, two-floor commercial space that has seen some better days, many of the original features of the vintage building will be restored in the build-out, including expanding up to four floors, which, as Urbanize.LA points out, was the height of the building for its first half-century, until it was shortened in later seismic upgrades. From the outside, the hotel will be done in brick that matches the 1908 materials and much of the old interior wood structure will be preserved and exposed in the updated design.

Construction on the hotel is set to begin before the end of this year, with a projected opening date of late 2018 or early 2019.
