If you’re one of our many astronaut readers, you’re no doubt already familiar with the concept of the “overview effect,” but for the rest of us, it’s a term for a special experience that humans report when they see the Earth from outer space. And, while you might not have a space flight booked any time soon, you can imagine what it might be like at a photography exhibition opening on Friday, featuring the images from the massively popular Instagram account Daily Overview

Daily Overview shares breathtaking satellite images from across the planet on their feed, which has amassed more than 450,000 followers. Beyond appreciating the striking beauty of the photos, the images also encourage viewers to think about the power of nature and the impact of human development.

A selection of the most-loved images have now been compiled into an elegant coffee table book and this weekend’s exhibit and reception at PLATFORM in Culver City mark the book’s release. Join them for a public launch party on Friday or stop by on Saturday or Sunday to flip through the book in person and admire large-scale archival prints of several of the published images. All proceeds from the print sales will be donated to the Natural Resources Defense Council, a charity devoted to preserving the natural environment.

The Overview book launch party and print exhibition is open to the public on Friday from 7 to 9:30pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm. The launch takes place in the rooftop greenhouse at PLATFORM, 8850 Washington Blvd in Culver City.
