Taschen Gallery's newest exhibit, "Mick Rock: Shooting for Stardust, the Rise of David Bowie & Co." opens today for a glam-rocking one-month run. The exhibition will showcase rare and unseen photographs of Bowie and friends taken by Mick Rock, a prolific music photographer and Bowie's official photographer during his (quite odd and very photogenic) "Ziggy Years." Think portraits and onstage antics, but also some intimate moments alone, backstage and with friends—Iggy Pop and Lou Reed make multiple appearances. As usual with Taschen's exhibits, the opening will coincide with the release of a new limited-edition book, The Rise of David Bowie, 1972-1973, signed by both David Bowie and Mick Rock and available for purchase, if you've got $1,800 to spare. There are 1,972 numbered copies—see what they did there?

LA is long overdue for a Bowie show—2013's smash exhibit "David Bowie is" hit galleries in London, Paris, Melbourne and Groningen, but came stateside for just three months at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, leaving Angelenos starved for Stardust. Luckily for us, Taschen does an incredible job with their music-themed exhibits—the gallery's inaugural show, "It's Just A Shot Away: The Rolling Stones in Photographs," (a few photos from which are still on display in the gallery) was visual evidence of Taschen's research, expertise and commitment to telling one hell of a story about its subjects; it left us anxious to find out who would be next, and we couldn't be happier that David Bowie is finally getting his day (month) in the LA sun.
