The annual extravaganza of sci-fi and comic book culture known as San Diego Comic-Con is under way, bringing with it tons of media attention, celebrity-spotting and general geeking-out. Here's a snapshot of the events so far.

What's happening at SDCC 2016

Star Trek is a major theme for this year’s Comic-Con, with 2016 marking 50 years of the franchise. To kick it off, the newest film, Star Trek Beyond, staged a gala premiere in San Diego on Wednesday, complete with fireworks and a live score by the San Diego Symphony.

Cosmetics giant MAC unveiled their own Trekkie-centric make-up collection on Thursday night, which includes 25 products inspired by female characters across the numerous shows, films and off-shoots.

Actor Zachary Quinto pulled double-duty, staying at the convention after the premiere of Star Trek (in which he plays Spock) to appear on a panel to discuss his other new movie, the Oliver Stone-crafted Snowden, about whistle-blower Edward Snowden, along with the film’s star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

At the panel for The Big Bang Theory, it was announced that the hilarious Katey Sagal has been tapped to play Penny's mom.

Fox is apparently staging exorcisms throughout the convention to promote the upcoming reboot of The Exorcism.

Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick graced a SDCC panel yesterday to promote their upcoming Dreamworks cartoon Trolls. Elsewhere, Shailene Woodley was on hand to plug Divergent and Cara Delevingne popped up to do press for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets as well as the hotly-anticipated Suicide Squad, debuting her new hair look on the red carpet.

Tonight, convention goers will take in a world premiere of Batman: The Killing Joke, a new animated film based on the dark graphic novel of the same title. The voice talent includes Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy and the MPAA has hit the direct-to-DVD release with a rare-in-the-genre R, noting the violent content is for adults only.

Here's how to follow along the action from home

Syfy has brought in actor Will Arnett (perhaps best known for Arrested Development, but no stranger to more Comic-Con style fare with credits like The Lego Batman Movie and the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboots) to host a nightly live series each night of the Con. So far, he has caught up with Wilmer Valderrama and the cast of Star Trek Beyond.

Conan O’Brien is skipping the political conventions to take his TBS show on the road to film from San Diego.

Time Out will also be live on the scene all weekend, so be sure to add us on Snapchat and keep an eye out here for breaking news, updates—and, of course, amazing costumes.
