Time Out says

For a reasonably priced room in the middle of the action, the Whisky Hotel really does the job. Situated just off Hollywood Boulevard, some of the town’s major sites are within walking distance from this glossy new-build hotel. It’s right around the corner from the Hollywood Bowl, the Walk of Fame (in fact, you’re basically right on it), the Fonda Theatre, Hollywood Museum, Chinese Theatre, Egyptian Theatre, and the home of the Academy Awards; the Dolby Theatre.

The Whisky Hotel opened at the start of 2025, and despite the fact that the paint has only just dried when we visit, they’ve attempted to conjure up an old world gentleman’s club feel to the place, adding a hint of Hollywood rock heritage to the mix. There are dark wood veneers, patterned Persian-style rugs, gilt-mirrors and deep green walls. This isn’t breezy classic California style, but something far moodier. The first US hotel from restaurateur Adolfo Suaya—who runs local Los Angeles-based Argentinian steakhouse chain Gaucho Grill—it’s the kind of place the guys from Motley Crue might have hit up for a cocktail c.1987.

Why stay at the Whisky Hotel?

The biggest draws are most definitely the price and location—it’s an excellent base for exploring Hollywood, or as a place to stay if you’re in town for a show at the nearby Hollywood Bowl, Fonda Theatre, or Hollywood Palladium. Expect to see smaller touring bands knocking about the corridors as well, crashing for the night after playing various local venues. Bear in mind that this isn’t a family spot, there’s more of an adults-only vibe here—as evidenced by the fact that guests are offered a shot of whisky upon check-in (don’t worry, it’s not compulsory). Despite its bargainous price, it’s tidy and neat, and there’s a pretty impressive rooftop area where a complimentary continental breakfast is served, further helping to keep your costs low.

What are the rooms like at the Whisky Hotel?

There are 132 rooms at the Whisky. My cozy double has thick, black-out curtains, a blue velvet settee, as well as a brown leather arm chair, gold lamps and a marble-topped table. They’re going for decadence on a budget, with dark walls, but a bright, white titled bathroom with an impressively powerful shower and complimentary (and decent) shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. The dark color scheme could be seen as a little oppressive, but if you’re into midcentury-styling with a touch of gothic energy, you’ll likely get a kick out of it. The bed is huge and plush—ideal for passing out on after a night partying in Hollywood. There’s no mini bar, but fridges are provided, as well as a Nespresso machine, and big televisions. There’s also a mini safe that fits a laptop and a few other valuables.

What is the food like at the Whisky Hotel?

There’s a complimentary al fresco continental breakfast up on the impressive 7th floor rooftop. It’s kind of basic; small croissants and pastries, egg-stuffed breakfast burritos, pork sausages, oatmeal, coffee and orange juice, but if you need some substance to start the day, this provides a perfectly serviceable carb layer. Turns out there is such a thing as a free breakfast in this town after all! The best thing about it though are the accompanying panoramic views of the city, which stretch all the way from DTLA to Century City, via Griffith Park, the Hollywood Hills and the iconic Capitol Records building. You can also get drinks and a couple of small dishes up on the roof during the rest of the day and into the evening.

What is the service like at the Whisky Hotel?

Everyone we came into contact with was super friendly and helpful. If you measure service in the amount of added extras, then the complimentary tot of whisky on check-in should bring a smile to your face.

What is the pool and gym like at the Whisky Hotel?

There is no pool or gym at the Whisky Hotel. If you want to get your blood pumping, then hit the streets and hike up to the top of the Hollywood Sign. It’ll take you two and a half hours to walk there from the hotel, but it might just be the most scenic workout in the whole city (and the wisdom tree is en route). If you’re desperate for a dip, then you can buy a day pass for the famous pool over at the Roosevelt Hotel, which is less than a 10 minute walk away from here.

What’s the area like around the Whisky Hotel?

It’s Hollywood, so expect things to be a little rough and ready, but keep your wits about you and you’ll be fine. As well as tourist favorites; the sprawling music-lovers paradise that is Amoeba Records, there are also a run of excellent bars; from the rooftop cowboy honky tonk Desert 5 Spot; the decidedly old school Musso and Frank (it’s a steakhouse, but you can sit up at the bar and just order a martini); and super-fun dive The Frolic Room. There are also music venues and theaters aplenty; from the old-school Pantages where you’ll find musicals and showtunes, to the cool Fonda Theatre for indie and new bands, the Hollywood Bowl for icons and Hollywood Palladium for well-known names.

Why should you book a stay at the Whisky Hotel?

Because it’s clean, cozy and kind of a steal for the area. It might not be the most lavish place in Los Angeles, but it’s got everything you need for a quick trip to the city.
