Dominique Ansel’s restaurant turns into a burger picnic pop-up this week

What happens when one of the world’s top pastry chefs tackles burgers? While we can’t promise cronut-flavored buns, Dominique Ansel’s weeklong burger picnic is still bound to delight—and you can bet there are other sweet treats and even another pastry-based bun involved.

Launching today, a Dom’s Burgers pop-up is taking over the 189 by Dominique Ansel dining room with fake grass, hammocks, picnic blankets and patties galore.

With spring break—and yesterday’s “spring forward” in mind—Ansel and the team of his first full-service restaurant are bringing the outdoors inside, essentially flipping the space into a park today through Friday, from 11:30am to 2pm. There’ll be various carts throughout the dining room, including a make-your-own-lemonade stand—offering strawberry-basil, ginger and pineapple variations of the springy drink—and a roasted-nut cart.

But the prized item of this picnic is prime to be the burger, with four options to choose from: beef, lamb, hot chicken and veggie.

Hit play on this video for a glimpse of all the burger glory that awaits:

Each burger comes priced at $15 and includes hand-cut herbed fries, whether you’re opting for the 189 Burger Jr., with ground chuck and short rib, tomato concasse confit, smoky pickled onions, Tomme de Savoie cheese and lemon-Dijon espelette aioli on a house-made potato bun; the Lamb Baaa-ger, made of ground lamb, za’atar, feta, verjus red onion and lemon confit aioli; the Hot Fried Chicken DKA Sandwich, which, you guessed it, is crunchy, spicy fried chicken served on a DKA (Ansel’s ever-so-crisp kouign-amann pastry); or the Vegging in the Park, a sweet potato-and-quinoa blackened patty with curried yogurt, cucumber pickle and cheddar.

Finish off the meal with a horchata, melon-and-mint or mango-and-passionfruit popsicle, or some fresh-baked chocolate chunk, chocolate pecan or white chocolate sea salt macadamia cookies from the bakery downstairs, all priced at $4 apiece.

The format follows 189’s weekend brunch formula, wherein orders rack up as stamps on a card, which you then present for your final bill. This week, as you make your way from stand to stand, get your card stamped per item, then simply take a seat and enjoy an afternoon of burgers, fries, lemonade and sweets. It’s all the best parts of a picnic, sans ants.

189 by Dominique Ansel is located at 189 The Grove Drive in the Grove, with a Dom’s Burgers pop-up running from 11:30am to 2pm today, March 12, through Friday, March 16.
