Time Out says

Intelligentsia's gorgeous tiled patio is always full of beautiful people having very important discussions. The coffee here is expensive, but you need only buy one drink to sit for hours. On hot days, the overhead misters keep everyone cool, including your pups, whom are welcome outside. You can sustain yourself with the shop's small but tasty selection of pastries (may we recommend the pistachio tea cake), or venture to the Cheesestore next door for freshly-made sandwiches. Then settle in with your cuppa to see and be seen at one of the hood's most regular scenes.

Slightly more dressed down than its Venice brethren, it loses some of its hipness but gains a bit of heart. The coffee is just as good as you'd expect it to be from a place with such a reputation and slightly cheaper on this side of town. With plenty of choice, anything good with a caffeine hit is likely to be found here. Although some of the more frivolous items are amazing, the espresso alone is good enough to keep me a customer.

In passing Intelligentsia is frequently classified as expensive and "elevated" (see: snobby). But don't let those sort of comments deter you, Intelligentsia has some of the best coffee & tea in the city. Although they are sometimes curt, the staff of baristas is an incredibly talented group (some were even featured in the documentary "Barista") that will brew you everything from single origin coffee to a type of tea that you've never even heard of before. Intelligentsia also does a great job of taking care of their regulars as well. When the Silverlake shop closed for remodels, the staff handed out free hot & iced coffees every morning in the back parking lot for weeks  -- a great gesture to show the neighborhood they could still come by for their fix.

I don't necessarily consider myself a coffee snob, but I will always pick Intelligentsia over any other coffee shop there is. Coffee generally tastes the same to me, but a cup of Americano from Intelligentsia never fails to make me swoon. They make a great Cafe Mocha too.
