Glut your taste buds on fresh halibut, fatty tuna, sea urchin, scallops, oysters at this top-notch sushi spot, but be prepared to wait: the lines are massive, and reservations scarce.

There are several sushi spots in Little Tokyo that I haven’t tried, mainly because of my unwillingness to wait in line for 2 hours for a meal. Sushi Gen, one of the most crowded sushi bars in Little Tokyo is a good case in point.

Sushi Gen seems to have both flavor and value in their $15 lunch special sashimi plate. The omnipresent crowd both outside the door and inside the entryway looked foreboding. If you make a dinner reservation, there is no grace period and all parties must be present to be seated. 

It’s a beautiful plate. The sashimi is on the safe side of things, but adding in a fair amount of toro in the reasonably priced chirashi bowl.The menu can be a bit complicated, but your server explains it for you. The main thing to know is that you cannot order the lunch special at the sushi bar. 

Honestly if you love sushi and you have not been to Sushi Gen you are missing out.  The best lunch special in all of LA.  The freshest most melt in your mouth fish you will find.  The lines are sometimes long, so I recommend if you want to snag a seat for the lunch special you get there around 11/11:30.  The sashimi lunch special is always my go to, as well as the uni box though the uni box has gotten a little on the expensive side lately. The service is always impeccable and most people have worked there for 20 plus years.  

I have also sat at the bar once and ordered a la carte, this is pretty expensive but the fish is just amazing.  The toro especially is one of my favorites!
