Blackwood Coffee Bar sits at the base of Runyon Canyon, a chic yet comfortable space offering caffeine hits to both hikers and sedentary folk. Inside, plush benches and chairs make it easy to settle in for hours—there's free WiFi, plus a magazine rack with plenty of reading material—while the outdoor patio provides a little more sunshine and some prime people-watching. On the menu, customers will find your standard cups of joe, but you'd be missing out if you didn't take a chance on some of the more out-there items: espresso shrub with sparkling water and orange zest, for example, or the Latin Cold Brew, which gets made with cashew horchata and Aztec chocolate bitters.

Rubies + Diamonds

icon-location-pin Hollywood

Nestled between Columbia Square's Sweetgreen and Sugarfish, there's a treasure waiting to be discovered. This diamond in the rough pulls out all the stops when it comes to making a truly original cup of coffee or tea, utilizing methods such as nitrogen-infusion technology for a perfect cup every time. Their flavor profiles are just as outlandish—think: a smoked-chili mocha latte—but the classic variety of lattes and teas, hot or cold, are also available for those who prefer a more traditional cup. Cheers!

This Hollywood outpost of the Fairfax coffee shop is a neighborhood hangout for industry types who laze on the Siren Studios-adjacent patio. It's also a favorite among coffee nerds, who drop in for single-origin pour-overs and cold brews from roasters like Sightglass Coffee, Coava Coffee and Victrola Coffee Roasters. There's also house-made chai tea and house-baked goodies such as salted caramel rice crispy bars and granola.

La Monarca Bakery

Stop by La Monarca’s Hollywood shop for a coffee and some sweets as you marvel in this homegrown chain's rapid expansion. Now with roughly one dozen locations throughout L.A., this chain is spreading organic coffee and Mexican treats to all corners. We recommend taking a seat at one of Hollywood's wooden tables and sipping one of the specialty coffees: Café Oaxaca (with Mexican chocolate) and the creamy Tres Leches Latte (made with organic Oaxacan espresso). If you’re in the mood for something more simple, don’t worry: There are enough cafe lattes, mochas and espressos to go around (as well as cafe con leche). If you’re stopping in for lunch, browse the pastry display as well as the afternoon and dinner menu, which includes salads, molletes and tortas.

As one of L.A.'s most reputable coffee chains—with locations in Hollywood, Santa Monica, Larchmont Village, North Hollywood, the Arts District, Mid-City, Downtown and Venice—Groundwork sells Angelenos organic, custom-blended coffee to start their day. A favorite among regulars, the Bitches Brew is one of their darkest roasts, and leaves a smokey aftertaste long after the cup is empty. Single-origin variations come from all over—Brazil, Ethiopia, Mexico, Peru—while their cold brew coffee has become so popular that it's also sold in bottles for wholesale.

Trejo's Coffee & Donuts

icon-location-pin Hollywood

First came Danny Trejo's successful career in action films, where he hacked, punched and highjacked planes to the top of Hollywood's list of macho men. Then came.... a taco shop? The actor launched a string of taco restaurants before opening his own coffee-and-doughnuts emporium, now with multiple locations of their own. This is where you can find daily-rotating flavors of classics, Latin-inspired doughnuts and some even formed into the shape of a machete—a nod to, you guessed it, Trejo's Machete. Of course what are doughnuts without coffee? Here the drip is brewed from a house blend, and there are also lattes, Mexican cortados, carafes of coffee (in 96- and 160-ounce containers), and horchata/cold-brew hybrids. Talk about action.

Tiago Coffee Bar & Kitchen

Take a break from bustling Hollywood Blvd and grab a coffee, lemonade or Thai iced tea on Tiago’s patio. We recommend grabbing some food as well (just not during prime lunch hours—the wait will kill ya): Try the chicken tortilla soup, house turkey panini and the prosciutto di parma sandwich. If it’s early, a cappuccino and one of the breakfast meals (granola and yogurt or ricotta hot cakes) will do. If you’re in the mood to show off, whip out your laptop (using the free WiFi, of course), then order an agave matcha latte and have fun pretending to work. Feeling particularly adventurous? Skip out on their Cake Monkey typical desserts and order the one-and-only bacon doughnut (yeah, you heard right).

Homeward Ground

This sleek yet comfy all-day café could almost be your living room—if your living room were a charming midcentury-modern haven. Hip vintage sofas, chairs and '60s lamps provide a chill Hollywood reprieve next to bookshelves and a small rock wall. It's like you're sipping a latte and snacking on an organic-egg breakfast sandwich in Don Draper's living room. When it comes to caffeinating, Homeward's got you covered with single-origin drip, mochas, americanos, cappuccinos and the other usual suspects, all rounded out by a couple scene stealers: nitro cold brew and nitro chai, to name a few.
